Ethiopia Takes Punitive Action against EPDP

January 3rd, 2011

Reports out of Addis indicate that the Ethiopian government slashed in half the financial support it was providing the Eritrean Democratic People’s Party (EPDP). Many expected such action but are expressing concern about the safety of those who oppose the conference or the coming congress. It is to be remembered that the Ethiopian radio Wogahta had publicly threatened anyone who opposed Ethiopia’s agenda. The EPDP was receiving 15-20,000 birr per month. The Afar movement is paid up to 150,000 Ethiopian birr per month while the Kunama organization receives 85,000 Eth birr. The others are paid between 15-25,000 Ethiopian birr each. Each member of the EDA executive committee is paid 3,000 Ethiopian birr per month. At present Bashir Ishaq, Kernelios Osman and Amha Domenico are considered employees of the Ethiopian state and are paid salary and benefits in full, equal to any other Ethiopian government employee.
